Treaties and alliances are very important during a war. If you don't have another country to back you up when you are in a time of need than your country could potentially be wiped out or pushed into debts beyond belief. Many treaties and alliances were formed during World War 1 that swayed the way the war went. It could have been very different if the alliances were different.

Of course some of the countries involved in the war played a bigger role in the war then other countries, for say Germany did a lot more than Japan.
The Yellow represents the Triple Entente. Pink represents central powers and Blue represents the neutral countries.

Treaties and AlliancesAustria Hungary and Germany had a treaty saying that they would back each other up in the case that one of them were attacked or were going to attack. This came into play when Austria Hungary went to declare war on Serbia for the assassination of Archduke.
Serbia had a treaty with Russia and when Austria Hungary declared war on them, Russia was there to back them up. The treaties didn't stop with these two, Russia had a treaty with Britain and France, they contacted them for backup. This treaty was know as the triple entente The alliance of the three central powers was known as the triple alliance The Treaty of Versailles was signed between the allied powers and Germany, it was a peace treaty and helped end the war. |
